Short answer: Often yes, but not always. Official guidance lists Visa among the international cards that can be linked to WeChat, and it says supported card types and acceptance can depend on the issuer and account. On 29 October 2026 Tencent announced an MoU with Visa to explore broader collaboration. It does not say anything has changed yet. Plan as if nothing changed and keep a backup.

What this means for you: the news is not a reason to skip a backup. Use the steps below, and test with a small payment.

Before you start

  • A physical Visa credit or debit card. Official guidance from China’s National Settlement Department (MOFCOM) lists Mastercard, Visa, JCB, Diners Club and Discover for international cards linked to WeChat. Other published guides also list American Express and UnionPay. Supported card types and acceptance can depend on the issuer and account, so check what the Add a Card screen accepts.
  • The WeChat app (WeChat Pay is inside it). Install it from your own app store. On the Apple App Store it is listed as “WeChat”, and the seller is Tencent Technology (Shenzhen) Company Limited.
  • A phone number that can receive SMS. WeChat sends a verification code to the number on your account during card setup. Any international number that can receive texts works. You don’t need a +86 number. If you use your home SIM, turn on roaming.
  • Your passport, to verify your account (see the limits below).
  • A second card from a different bank, in case your bank rejects the first one.
  • A backup wallet. Alipay with a foreign card is our first choice.

For the full WeChat Pay setup, see our main guide: How to use WeChat Pay in China.

Step by step

  1. Set up WeChat and verify your account at home, before you fly. Follow the WeChat Pay guide.

  2. Add your Visa card. In the international version of WeChat, open Me → Pay and Services → Wallet → Bank Cards (some versions say Cards) → Add a Card. If Wallet doesn’t appear, check the toggle under Me → Settings → General → Tools (labelled Features in some versions).

WeChat Wallet screen in English listing Balance, Mini Fund, Bank Cards, Relative Cards, e-CNY, Weixin Pay Score and Customer Service Center.
Wallet → Bank Cards is where you add the Visa card
  3. Approve with your bank if it sends a code or an app prompt. Enter the WeChat SMS code too.

  4. Verify your identity (recommended). Linking a foreign card doesn’t strictly require ID verification, but unverified accounts are capped at RMB 15,000 per month. Verifying with a passport (or a foreign permanent residence card, or a Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan travel permit) raises the limit to RMB 50,000 per month and RMB 65,000 per year. Verification usually takes minutes. It can take up to 24 hours if manual review is triggered. Upload a clear, well-lit photo, because blurry photos are rejected.

  5. Check the in-app payment page for current fees or promotions before you confirm a payment.

  6. Test a small purchase after you land, such as a bottle of water.

Alipay and WeChat Pay (微信支付) stand-up signs on a fast-food counter at Beijing Capital airport. Look for the green 微信支付 (WeChat Pay) sign at the till.

  7. If it fails, pay with your backup. Don’t hold up the queue.

Fees and limits

  • WeChat Pay waives its 3% fee on every international bank card transaction under RMB 200. Payments of RMB 200 or less carry no fee.
  • Above RMB 200, a 3% fee applies to the full amount. A RMB 250 payment costs RMB 7.50.
  • First-time linkers of an international card get the 3% fee waived on daily payments under RMB 1,000 for 60 consecutive days from the first transaction. Savings are capped at RMB 30 per transaction.
  • Your own bank may also add a foreign transaction fee.

Published limits vary by source. The Beijing municipal government gives USD 5,000 per transaction and USD 50,000 annually. Other guides report about RMB 6,500 per transaction, RMB 50,000 per month and RMB 65,000 per year, citing WeChat’s help page. Check the limit shown in your own app before making large payments.

Alipay (your backup): Alipay generally waives its platform fee for transactions of CNY 200 or less. Transactions above CNY 200 may incur a 3% fee on the full amount. Check the payment screen for the applicable fee or promotions. Source: Shanghai municipal government.

FAQ

Did Tencent and Visa make foreign Visa cards work on WeChat Pay?

Not as far as the announcement says. Tencent announced an MoU on 29 October 2026 to explore broader collaboration, including future cross-border payment solutions. It gives no launch date, no eligible countries or cards, and no immediate change to existing foreign-card linking. We will update this page if that changes.

Official guidance lists Mastercard, Visa, JCB, Diners Club and Discover. Other published guides also list American Express and UnionPay. Whether yours works can depend on the issuer and account. Take two cards.

Do I need to verify my account with a passport?

Not strictly. But unverified accounts are capped at RMB 15,000 per month. Verifying raises the limit to RMB 50,000 per month and RMB 65,000 per year.

Should I rely on WeChat Pay alone?

No. Set up Alipay as well, and consider TenPayGo, Tencent’s app for WeChat Pay merchants.
