Internet in China 2026: What Works, What's Blocked and Your Options
Short answer: On Chinese networks (local SIMs, hotel and café Wi-Fi), most Western apps — Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X and ChatGPT — are blocked. The easiest fix for visitors is a travel eSIM or home roaming, which routes your data abroad. Set it up before you fly.
What works and what doesn’t (on Chinese networks)
Section titled “What works and what doesn’t (on Chinese networks)”| Works normally | Blocked | Patchy |
|---|---|---|
| WeChat, Alipay, Apple iMessage/FaceTime, Apple Maps, Microsoft Outlook, Bing, Booking.com, Trip.com, Airbnb | Google (Search, Maps, Gmail, Drive), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X/Twitter, Telegram, ChatGPT, most Western news sites | LinkedIn, some banking apps, Zoom, Slack, Notion, Spotify |
“Patchy” means it may work, be slow, or work only for some features.
Your options
Section titled “Your options”- Travel eSIM (recommended). Data is routed outside mainland China, so blocked apps work on mobile data. See best eSIM for China.
- Home carrier roaming. Works the same way, but check your carrier’s China pricing first.
- VPN. Some visitors use one on hotel Wi-Fi. Using unapproved VPNs is restricted under Chinese rules and reliability varies a lot, so don’t rely on it as your only plan.
Prepare before you fly
Section titled “Prepare before you fly”- Download offline maps and translation packs (Apple Maps works in China; Google Translate’s offline mode works without a connection).
- Tell your contacts to use WeChat or iMessage for your trip as a backup.
- Download everything you need from Google Drive before you go.
- Set up 2-factor codes that don’t depend on Google (SMS still works on roaming).
- Install the apps you’ll need in China before arrival — some Chinese apps are easier to download outside China, and Google Play is blocked on local networks. See must-have apps.
