Short answer: China's winter city: the Ice and Snow World opens around late December, foreign passports and overseas cards are accepted for tickets there, and Central Street and Saint Sophia are an easy walk apart. Bring real cold-weather gear.

Visa-free entry and 240-hour transit

Harbin's airport is a designated port for 240-hour visa-free transit. If you fly on to a third country or region, you can stay up to 10 days and travel across the 24 permitted provinces (Tibet, Xinjiang and a few other regions are not included). (official source)

Metro and taxis

Metro: Foreigners can activate the Harbin metro QR code in Alipay (set the city to Harbin, open Transport, enable Metro). Ticket machines accept Alipay and WeChat, and the service counter is the fallback. Pay with Alipay or WeChat rather than counting on a contactless bank card at the gates. (sources) Set up Alipay with your foreign card before you fly as a backup.

Didi: Didi works inside Alipay. Expect longer waits and higher prices in snow, at rush hour and during the Ice Festival. See how to use Didi as a foreigner.

Hotels in Harbin

Check in with your passport: hotels register foreign guests with the police automatically at check-in, so there's nothing else to do. Compare hotels in Harbin on Trip.com (affiliate link): the site is in English, shows prices in your currency and takes foreign cards. Save the hotel's address in Chinese characters to show taxi drivers.
