Beijing for First-Time Visitors: Airport, Metro, Payments & Tickets (2026)

Short answer: The big sights are booked online with your passport, often days ahead. The Forbidden City releases tickets at 20:00, 7 days before, and closes on Mondays.

Visa-free entry and 240-hour transit

Beijing's airports are designated ports for 240-hour visa-free transit. If you fly on to a third country or region, you can stay up to 10 days and travel across the 24 permitted provinces (Tibet, Xinjiang and a few other regions are not included).

Metro and taxis

Metro: All subway lines, including the airport lines, take contactless Visa and Mastercard at the gates. Alipay's metro QR code works too. Set up Alipay with your foreign card before you fly as a backup.

Didi: Didi works well inside Alipay. Avoid rush hour (7:30–9:30 and 17:00–19:30), when the metro is much faster. See how to use Didi as a foreigner.

Hotels in Beijing

Check in with your passport: hotels register foreign guests with the police automatically at check-in, so there's nothing else to do. Compare hotels in Beijing on Trip.com (affiliate link): the site is in English, shows prices in your currency and takes foreign cards. Save the hotel's address in Chinese characters to show taxi drivers.

FAQ

Can I use 240-hour visa-free transit in Beijing?

Yes. Beijing Capital and Daxing airports are designated ports. If you fly on to a third country or region, you can stay up to 10 days and travel across the 24 permitted provinces, not just Beijing.

Can I pay for the Beijing subway with a foreign card?

Yes. Contactless Visa and Mastercard work at the gates on every line, including the airport express lines. Alipay's metro QR code also works.

How far ahead should I book the Forbidden City?

Tickets release at 20:00 Beijing time, 7 days before your visit. In peak season they can sell out within minutes, so be online at release time.
