Shenzhen for First-Time Visitors: Airport, Metro, Payments & Tickets (2026)

Short answer: Shenzhen is the easiest way in from Hong Kong: walk across at Futian or Huanggang, or take the 15–20 min train from West Kowloon. Everything runs on Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Visa-free entry and 240-hour transit

Shenzhen's airport is a designated port for 240-hour visa-free transit. If you fly on to a third country or region, you can stay up to 10 days and travel across the 24 permitted provinces (Tibet, Xinjiang and a few other regions are not included).

Metro and taxis

Metro: Alipay's metro QR code is the reliable way to pay. Some gates also take foreign contactless cards, but not all of them yet, so don't rely on it. Set up Alipay with your foreign card before you fly as a backup.

Didi: Didi is easy and cheap. During APEC week (16–20 November 2026) expect road closures; use the metro. See how to use Didi as a foreigner.

Hotels in Shenzhen

Check in with your passport: hotels register foreign guests with the police automatically at check-in, so there's nothing else to do. Compare hotels in Shenzhen on Trip.com (affiliate link): the site is in English, shows prices in your currency and takes foreign cards. Save the hotel's address in Chinese characters to show taxi drivers.

FAQ

Can I use 240-hour visa-free transit in Shenzhen?

Yes. Shenzhen Bao'an airport and several land crossings from Hong Kong are designated ports. Hong Kong counts as a separate region, so arriving from Hong Kong and flying out elsewhere (or vice versa) can qualify.

Can I pay for the Shenzhen metro with a foreign card?

On some gates, yes, but coverage is still patchy. Set up Alipay before you arrive and use its metro QR code.

Which border crossing should I use from Hong Kong?

Futian (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line) or Huanggang for central Shenzhen, Luohu for the old town, and the high-speed train if you are going straight on to Guangzhou or further.
